A few years ago my son started following a website called Days of the Year (daysoftheyear.com). Every day, they post what day it is. For example, today, October 2nd, is Name you car day. It is also Farm Animals Day.
Some of the days they post are funny and useless, others like Mental Health Day help bring awareness to certain issues such as disease, or a fact of history etc...
According to them, there is no Martial Arts or Karate day.
I want to change that!!!
I think that having a Karate Day or Martial Arts day to help get people involved in the Martial Arts can only help. Getting kids into Martial Arts schools helps get them off the streets. It helps get them away from their screens. It teaches values, and patience, and shows them that hard work and dedication pays off.
I am going to start pushing for Karate Day to be added to the calendar on November 10th every year. Why November 10th? That was Funakoshi Sensei's birthday. He is known as the grandfather of modern Karate and the founder of Shotokan, which is perhaps the most studied form of Karate.
But Karate day isn't only about Karate, it is about Martial Arts in general. To help promote the Martial Arts and to get people of all races, ages, gendres and cultures to try a Martial Art and hopefully get involved in Martial Arts.
If you support this idea, please tweet this blog and add Days of the Year to the tweet. You can tag them (www.twitter.com/daysoftheyear) or you can hashtag daysoftheyear and karateday.
Lets make this a thing!!!
As many of you may know, I created what is called the Martial Arts & Fitness Podcast. Episode 1 was recorded on Friday and went live. It initially started on a platform called Anchor, but is now available on Spotify, Google Podcasts and PocketCast to name a few.
I will have links to each later on in this post.
Really, what I wanted to do with this post is help make the podcast more accessible to people who may be interested in Karate, Martial Arts and Kata. Each episode will of course have a different theme, but they are all about Martial Arts, Fitness, Nutrition and training.
A few thank yous are in order.
Mainly to Sensei Stacy Ungar for being my first guest and for allowing the podcast to be recorded at his Dojo - CSL Martial Arts. (cslmartialarts.ca for more information).
His knowledge about Karate, and the Martial Arts in general is amazing and I think it was a great way to kick off this podcast.
I also need to thank my buddy Dan for thinking this was a good idea, and for the many hours of conversations we've had about Karate and Jiu-Jitsu. It was those conversations that made me realize we should record them so people can learn and get some other perspectives. Or maybe encourage somebody to go try a Martial Art.
I guess a big THANK YOU needs to go to my good friends Arie, Mike & John. As teenagers we all participated in Kajukenbo. We also watched too many Martial Arts movies, played too much Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat and we all had a passion for the Martial Arts.
I of course need to thank my wife and son for allowing me the time to do this. I hope they find it at least somewhat interesting.
If you want to find the podcast, it is called THE MARTIAL ARTS AND FITNESS PODCAST WITH COACH OZZIE.
Here are the places you can hear the Podcast:
I'd love some feedback and stay tuned for episode 2 which will be a discussion about JiuJitsu and Intermittent Fasting.
